Instruction & Inspiration
Enjoy a structured Zoom figure drawing art class with instruction on the technical and artistic aspects of drawing and using the iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate app as your tools. This is a monthly online class originally introduced for Covid Shelter-in-Place and that will end with a last class on August 21st, 2021. All instruction is via use of Procreate app on the iPad, though use of other media by students is okay. The class is run very similar to a traditional figure drawing class with shorter poses in the first half and worked up to longer poses in the second half. It is a small class with the opportunity for everyone to receive guidance from the instructor. Suitable for beginners and experienced artists. I share a loose, gestural and expressive approach to drawing from the model. This class will train your eye, sharpen your observational skills and equip you with the technical and artistic experience to make the most of your iPad as an amazing art tool. The models during this series of classes may be minimally clothed or nude and therefore this class is for students 18+ and for participation where the computer will not be seen by children under 18. No photography, recording or screen capture is permitted at any time during these sessions. The introductory and review sections (first and last 30 minutes) may be recorded by the host. Students are encouraged to show their work as part of the class.
Registration
The cost is $45, including the model fee. To pay for this class please use the link above, or you can alternatively pay via PayPal.me. I send the Zoom details ahead of the class once you have registered.
Theme: Picasso’s Neo-Classicism Period
From 1917 to 1925 Pablo Picasso’s art veered away from the revolutionary experiments and explorations of Cubism (Analytical followed by Synthetic) towards a figurative naturalism inspired by the pre-Roman Iberian sculptures he’d been exposed to growing up in Spain and the works of the Italian Renaissance painters he saw after his first visit to Italy. Our model will be Sarah.

Preparation & Guidance
-
This is a social class in which we see each other, share ideas and show some of the drawings we create, between the posing and drawing segments of the class. Please enable your video and microphone in the breaks to be able to participate fully, and mute them during posing.
-
If you have a question or need assistance, please type it into the chat or use the raise hand function. If you have the newest version of Zoom (and I recommend you update your Zoom version before class, under zoom.us / Check for Updates) you can drag the video windows to reorder them and keep the models at the top of your gallery view grid.
-
Please join the Zoom meeting on a Mac or PC computer that is separate to your iPad. This allows you to have your iPad dedicated to drawing while looking at the model on your computer screen. To avoid reverb and echo please make sure you are only joined to the Zoom meeting from one device and keep your audio muted unless speaking.
-
In your Zoom preference, under Video preferences, check “Hide non-video participants”. This makes it easier to see the model’s video/s in Gallery view.
-
Some models have multiple webcam views. Select the view you wish to draw. You can enlarge the selected video to full size by clicking the option menu, represented by three horizontal dots (…) in the upper right corner of the model’s video screen, and selecting “Pin Video” from the options there. If you are on a tablet or other mobile device you can find the “Pin Video” option by double tapping/tapping and holding the models video screen.
-
All instruction will be using an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and the Procreate app. If you are using an iPad and Apple Pencil please make sure they are both fully charged before class.
-
Please install the latest version of the Procreate app on your iPad. If you already have Procreate make sure you have updated the app.

For greater range of brushes, I recommend visiting my iPad Art Apps page and purchasing the recommended Procreate brush sets mentioned on that page. You’ll find many more brushes available in the Procreate Community Discussions boards (particularly Marketplace and Resources).
Here are some third party brush packs that stand out for me as having absolutely amazing brushes for figure drawing (especially for fast gesture work):

Recommended but not essential: take photographs of a a variety of drawing papers and other surfaces (not drawn on, though they can be dirty, distressed, messed up and have torn edges) of various colors and values (lightness/darkness). The more uniform the lighting on the surface the better. You can use your phone to take the pictures but transfer them (via AirDrop if you’re using an iPhone) to your iPad once taken. As an advanced option we can open up or import these photographs as backgrounds over which to draw.
-
Open this Padlet url on your iPad browser and practice adding an image saved in your recent photos (Camera Roll) on your iPad. Just click on the Padlet background or the “+” symbol in lower right of the Padlet gallery, and choose the upload symbol (looks like an upward arrow over a horizontal bar, or a mountain scene profile) to add a drawing from your Photos. Please include your name in the post title or description so we know who made the drawing. Click “Post”. Once you’ve tested adding an image to the Padlet then please delete it by clicking on the three small dots in the top right of the post and choose “delete”.

The ideal is definitely having a computer (Mac or PC) for the Zoom meeting and dedicated iPad for drawing. However if your tools at hand are a phone and iPad, I would suggest joining the Zoom meeting on your phone and dedicating your iPad to drawing. Your view of the model on your phone will be small but can still work.
Here are some examples of iPad life drawings from recent sessions, all created using Procreate:

And here are some examples of life drawings created using traditional media:

Drawing from the model is the way artists have honed their drawing skills for thousands of years. This workshop follows a semi-traditional structure, with short gesture and moving poses early on to warm up with and then progressively longer poses. We’ll explore gesture, shape, movement, value, composition and the use of positive and negative space.
Your instructor, Jeremy Sutton, has been life drawing for over thirty years and will be sharing his insights and expressive approach to drawing the model. This is a class that all levels of drawers can benefit from. The workshop is run “British-style” which means there is a tea break in the middle!
This class is run remotely on Zoom.
Do I need any training or experience in drawing or painting?
No prior art experience is needed. Jeremy teaches with encouragement, patience and enthusiasm. All you need is an open mind and willingness to explore.
Small Class Size
The class size will be kept a maximum of approximately twelve students.
Students must be 18 years or older. No photography, screen captures or videography by students is permitted in this workshop. Please note the registration is final and non-refundable. If you find you unexpectedly can not make it, then the value of the registration payment can be applied to a later class or workshop or any other product or service offered on PaintboxTV®.
