In this session I introduce some of my favorite exciting new features in Corel Painter 2022. These include the mixed media capabilities that allow mixing of watercolor and dry media brushwork. I also love the new Captured panel and associated dab libraries and new captured dab capabilities. It makes every dab-type brush a fountain of infinite mark-making possibilities!!:-) The new brush Size Library and the Display in Grayscale option in the Navigator are also wonderfully useful! I also love the new Favorite option, combined with the new Filter options, in the brush selector. Finally I love the new ability to use Option-click (Mac) / Alt-click (PC) on the layer visibility icon to show just that layer – very useful for complex multi-layered collage projects. All these are demonstrated in this session.
Please note the following clarifications about Painter 2022’s new features:
Showing Global Favorites
There are many ways to assign the favorite status to brushes, including Option-click (Mac) / Alt-click (PC) on the brush variant or clicking on the gray heart in the brush selection bar. These are toggle commands that unfavorite an already favorited brush. The My Favorites filter, when the only filter checked, will show all favorites globally. It lists them by category and you have to select each category in turn to view the favorite variants in that category.
Restoring Default Captured Dabs
Go to the General Panel (Cmd-B Mac, Ctrl-B PC), change the dab type from captured to circular, then click the Reset Tool button. That will restore the original dab.
Effect of Changing the Captured Dab is Limited to the Current Variant Only
When selecting a dab in the “Captured” dab library, only the currently selected captured dab brush is changed. The highlighted dab in the “Captured” dab library UI does not ‘synchronize’ with the currently selected brush. It simply shows the dab that was last selected in that panel.
The Dab Preview panel is the most reliable way to determine what is the shape of the currently selected dab. For now it is best to use the “Captured” dab library simply as a selector and not an indicator of what the current dab is.
